She joined the Cufa board in 2010 after a long association with Cufa through Summerland Credit Union. Ms Sweeny was and remains a passionate supporter of Cufa and its work in emerging economies in the Asia Pacific region. Over many years Ms Sweeny worked with Cufa in Fiji, Myanmar and Cambodia and represented Cufa on a number of missions in Asia, Pacific, Europe and Russia. Over Ms Sweeny’s time with Cufa the organisation grew and prospered and developed a strong reputation as an ethical and robust partner of our Asian pacific neighbours.

Ms Sweeny has worked tirelessly during the initial stages of Cufa’s independence post 2013. Ms Sweeny was integral to Cufa’s operations as it developed its projects and relationships with funders and other stakeholders.

As Chair of the Cufa Board from 2010 to 2020 Ms Sweeny was pivotal in ensuring Cufa’s staff had access to educational opportunities to develop their skills to help their communities. To honour Ms Sweeny’s work and dedication to Cufa and to continue her long held belief that education is an important tool to empower people and improve their economy the Cufa Board created in perpetuity the Margot Sweeny Education Scholarship

Purpose

The Purpose of this scholarship has been established to assist Cufa staff access to educational opportunities to further develop their work-related skills and technical competence.

When to apply

  • Applications will be open twice a year for the December and July selection rounds
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with the Selection panel
  • Scholarships will be allocated after interviews have been completed

Amount

up to AUD$3,000 for educational expenses for each scholarship

May also include up to 1 day a month of study leave over the course of the scholarship program

Number Available

Cufa may provide up to 3 scholarships per annum depending upon the quality of the applications

Payment arrangements for the Scholarship

The payment for course and registration fees, and textbooks is reimbursable subject to the student passing the unit of study as evidenced by their official transcript. The employee will be required to pay for the course fees for each semester directly to the education provider. Where the employee is unable to pay for the course fees up-front, Cufa will consider to advance the payment for course fees directly to the education provider on a case-by-case basis.

Criteria for application

  • Applicant must have worked at Cufa for at least 12 months and must commit to remain working for Cufa for at
  • least 12 months after the completion of the scholarship.
  • Applicant must not have been in receipt of previous training benefits from Cufa in the last 3 years
  • The chosen area of study/training is related to your work with Cufa
  • You are able to demonstrate commitment to achieving your study goals
  • You have demonstrated a need for this education in relation to your professional development

Conditions

An individual can only receive this scholarship once during their employment with Cufa.

How to Apply

An application form will be available to all staff in the month of December and July each calendar year: (applications can be in either English or the local language)

  • A statement by the applicant (up to 500 words) explaining how the scholarship will benefit the applicant and the
  • work of Cufa
  • A statement of support from the direct supervisor that the education provided by the scholarship will benefit the
  • work of Cufa
  • Completed Application Form
  • Applications emailed to [email protected] by the 31 December and 30 July each calendar year

Selection Process

Applications will be considered by a panel chaired by Ms Margot Sweeny. The panel’s decision will be final and no further correspondence will be entered into.
