Congratulations to Irene Narayan from SCU

NEW VIDEO! WATCH IRENE’S INSPIRING VIDEO SUBMISSION HERE.

With a record number of applications for the 2015 TSWG Harry Zaphir Village Entrepreneur Scholarship, the judges were set a formidable task. In the end, Irene Narayan’s (from SCU) outstanding submission combined with her obvious passion and commitment stood out, and she is off to Cambodia in May 2016 to provide training, advice and support to credit union members who are starting or growing their small businesses As part of the scholarship, Irene, 30, is fundraising to support her chosen Village Entrepreneur.

As well as a Christmas bake and raffling off some choice prizes, Irene’s fundraising promises to be – well, hair raising: she’s holding a Haircut Day with a difference. “I am currently looking for some ‘victims’ from management who will agree to have a crazy hairstyle – all in the name of raising money for this great cause!”

Irene has long been involved in volunteering for her church and youth groups, and is also off to World Youth Day in Krakow in 2016. She sees her scholarship as an opportunity to take her interest in community to a whole new level.

“I am really looking forward to seeing how CUFA runs their programs,” she said. “I want to see the issues the Village Entrepreneurs face day to day, and to really understand and appreciate the village and community environment.” She will also have the chance to delve deeper into Cambodia’s rich history. “It’s one of my favourite things to do,” she said.

SUPPORT A VILLAGE ENTREPRENEUR!

CUFA would like to congratulate all applicants on their high standards, and give grateful thanks to TSWG for their ongoing support. We would also like to thank our dedicated judges who did a magnificent job reviewing, deliberating and discussing all the applications:

• Sue Zaphir, a credit union member for 30 years who ran a credit union agency from her pharmacy back in the ‘80’s, and wife of the late Dr. Harry Zaphir
• Kaye Wetzler, a 40+ year veteran in the credit union industry who still plays a pivotal role in the Australian movement
• Emily Newley, Marketing Coordinator at TSWG

CALLING 2016 ENTRANTS

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The Harry Zaphir Scholarship is sponsored by TSWG in partnership with CUFA, and is awarded to an emerging leader of the credit union movement. It was set up in memory of Harry Zaphir, a highly regarded member of the Australian Mutual movement, and valued supporter of CUFA and the Village Entrepreneur program. So if you – or someone you know – have got what it takes to be an ambassador for CUFA, 2016 is the time to start working on your entry! Click here now for further information.
